Looking Into Atomos Shogun with Sony a7S

I'm exploring camera options. These are examples of the Sony a7S paired with the Atomos Shogun 4k video recorder.

Took a few Macro shots in 4k UHD last Week and decided to write a little poem and let it record by my Dad. This is the result. Downscaled to 1080 p Shot on Sony A7s and Atomos Shogun with an Sigma 105 mm 2,8 f Macro Lens Music :A Late Night's Wandering / A. Shots from my home town of Richmond, the riverside, where I have done many camera tests over the years AND that other place I do my tests in, Brighton! Shot to test out the new Atomos Shogun 4K recorder. I will be talking about it in more detail on my blog as well as thoughts on the Odyssey 7Q+ from Convergent Design. Graded with custom curves and film convert. 10% off with code bloom at gopb.co/filmconvert music "Observation Wheel" by Jacob Montague from The Music Bed gopb.co/musicbed Cinema Gamma 4 during the day and Cinema Gamma 2 at night. Colour setting was Cinema. Lenses. Canon 70-200, Sigma 50mm ART. Canon 16-35 F4. Special thanks to James Miller!

The most beautiful and loving cat in the world, my teeny little old girl Noodle. She's almost 15 and been with me since I was in my 20s. Words cannot describe how much she means to me. She has popped up in a few of my reviews and videos but never had the starring role. Time to rectify that! Shot on the A7s & Shogun combo in 4K ProRes LT. Cinema Gamma 4 - Cinema colour. Graded with custom curves and FilmConvert 10% off with code "bloom" at gopb.co/filmconvert Lenses used: Sigma 35mm F1.4 and Canon 100mm Macro F2.8 L Music Fragile by Black Ewing courtesy of The Music Bed gopb.co/musicbed Noodle is tortie Burmese in case you want to know what breed she is. She's the best!

Very quick trip to Brighton on the South coast of the UK. Shot in the fast fading winter light with Philip Bloom. We were both doing our initial tests with the Atomos Shogun, 4k Recorder. My test is only with the Sony A7S with Cine Gamma 4 (Cine4) and (Movie) Colour mode. Really like SLOG on the A7S, just not in low light. Its a very nice fairly light, easy to use 4k capable machine. Really brings the Sony A7S into a new light. The perfect companion for this and a few other cameras. H.264 at 3840 x 2160 (Profile 5.2) 60Mbps, unfortunately due to compression, you will see banding and blocking that is not on the ProRes version. Could do with 200Mbps on this, might re-render tomorrow. Graded using custom 3DLuts & curves. Download the H.264 4k file here. http://goo.gl/2WBqQI

I spent most of my dives in the Channel Islands this week shooting the Sony a7R and Atomos Shogun in a prototype Nauticam housing, courtesy Nauticam and Reef Photo & Video. Here is a raw (but watermarked) clip from a Sony a7S w/Metabones EF-S adapter and Canon 8-15mm lenses @ 15mm, connected to an Atomos Shogun recording at 4K/24p in Prores HQ (~700 Mbps). It is really a remarkable system. If you want to see it in 4K, you can head over to the YouTube version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrUsyMbKx20, or download the original from Vimeo. The YouTube version actually looks a lot better if you turn on hi-res streaming. This clip was shot near Santa Cruz Island at around 10:30am on Wed, Dec 31, 2014.

The 4K footage has been down converted to 1080p in post since my four year old laptop can't handle the 4k sequence rendering: Sony A7S Atomos Shogun Canon 35 mm 2f Canon 50 mm 1.2f Tokina 11-16mm 2.8f Picture Profile 6/Custom Look Up Table/RGB Curve grade My first time using the Shogun, I'm very pleased with this equipment although the battery life is bad. Very user friendly and becomes second nature after a while although I have to use it in a real shooting scenario to really say so. Very happy to be shooting 4K now and plan on buying a faster machine to handle the footage for rendering and exports that won't take a week and crash. Music | Ahmad Jamal "Ghetto Child"

Shot some test footage with the Sony A7S, and Atomos Shogun external recorder. Final export at 1080p. Music: "After The Week I've Had" by Dexter Britain (http://www.dexterbritain.co.uk)

So, 4:30am, rig with new toy. A test flight! A7s to capture 4K, Atomos Shogun recording 4K 8bit Prores. Lens 24-300mm F3.5-6.3!! Never mind, one day. Edit:FCPX, Speed Conformed FPCX 50% Color Grade: FCPX, MB Looks. Music: "The Sea" Jonathan Sohwartz

Shot an acapella in very low light as a 4k field test with Sotorios from the Political Animals. Filmed late one evening around downtown New Haven and Three Sheets Bar. Very impressed with the look of the Shogun!

First day with both the A7s and the Shogun. Pretty rough and sloppy, but I was very impressed by the images. Nikon Ai lenses, you can see my 24mm vingetting with the 3 ND filters that were screwed on. A few Vision Color LUTs are in there.

Download original file to see the glorious 4k image. A few quick shots from the Atoms Shogun with the A7S in 4k. My shogun arrived a few days ago and I have not had much of a look at it yet. But I finally got a bit of time to run through the menus and test it out in the low winter sun. First impressions are as follows; - Screen is massive, really massive. I had this mounted onto the hot shoe and on a monopod and it was little and easy to carry, but it will take a bit of getting used to if you are used to smaller rigs. - Screen quality is super, I rarely needed to punch in to the 2:1 zoom to focus, you can normally nail focus in regular old 1:1 view. - Can't record 4k raw on A7S - Can't record 120fps on A7S - SSD caddy feels loss when inserted in the shogun - Battery life is terrible on the stock battery provided - Focus peaking could be stronger - Screen seems bright and well exposed even in sun light (so far) - The image quality is incredible, very filmic and dreamy. - Takes a grade just wonderfully. I am editing this on a 5k iMac, and it really does look stunning. I shot this with S-log2, at f2 on a Canon 35mm f2 IS lens in APSC mode, using a metabones adaptor. Using a tiffen VND filter.
